Unraveling the Enneagram Type Five Personality

At their core, Enneagram Type Fives possess a thirst for knowledge and information. When they learn about a topic they dig deep, deeper than any other personality on the Enneagram. They constantly seek to understand the world around them, hoping to counteract the depletion they feel as their energy gets taken from the world around them. To safeguard themselves from appearing inadequate, they diligently hoard knowledge and expertise.

Fives who are not doing well or who feel stressed tend to be highly focused and single-minded individuals, which can sometimes lead them to become distant and disengage from the world and people around them. Their deep immersion in their thoughts may cause them to seem heartless and uninterested in building relationships. It is very important to remember that it costs Fives A LOT to bring themselves to relationships, even in the workplace.

On the other hand, when Fives are doing well, their objectivity and analytical minds can make them a source of wisdom and invaluable advice. As team members, they are celebrated for their cool and calm approach to crisis situations, where they can keep emotions at bay and tackle problems with clear thinking. They are extremely logical and the best to have in emergencies, as they bring their head to the game and leave their heart at home.

Supporting Enneagram Type Fives On Your Team

1. Allow Adequate Preparation Time:

Fives prefer to avoid being put on the spot and thrive when they have time to prepare. It's essential to share meeting agendas in advance, allowing them to gather their thoughts and feel confident about their contributions. If you need a Five to answer something during a meeting, inform them beforehand to avoid triggering feelings of incompetence or inadequacy.

2. Embrace Predictability:

Fives appreciate predictability as it helps them plan and allocate their inner resources efficiently. Avoid surprising them with sudden changes or new challenges without proper notice. A great example of this is Christmas presents. This is something Fives can dread as they are required to appropriately react on the fly, something that is very difficult for them. Providing clarity and predictability creates a conducive environment for them to perform at their best.

3. Respect Their Time and Space:

To foster a healthy working relationship with Fives, it's crucial to respect their need for personal space and time. Make appointments to discuss important matters with them, but keep interactions brief, professional, and to the point. Fives prefer being approached with analytical questions rather than emotional ones. While they may open up to their close confidants, such as family and friends, they tend to compartmentalize emotions at the workplace. Know when it is ok to draw them out and when you need to leave them out instead.
