Understanding Type Three's Motivation to Achieve and Be Seen as Successful

Welcome back to our series on Enneagram personality types! Last post, we delved into the world of Type Twos, and now, we'll explore the fascinating traits of Type Threes. Threes are characterized by their intense drive to succeed, coupled with their fear of failure. Threes believe that they are loved for what they do.  So, what we see on the outside is a personalitly driven to accomplish and succeed.  But it is important to remember that they are only driving so hard in order to get love and appreciation from those around them.

In this post, we'll explore how we can support and encourage the Threes in our teams, helping them grow into authentic, successful individuals who prioritize collective success over personal gains.

Understanding the Type Three Personality

Threes possess a need not only to succeed but also to appear successful in the eyes of others. The way they do this is not only giving every endeavor their best shot, but also changing the way they present information so that they look successful, when they might not have been.  This often leads to an inauthentic image, striving to impress and please others subconsciously and other Types can easily pick up on this. It is essential to remember that this behavior arises from their desire for acceptance and validation.

Encouraging Authenticity and Growth

1. Effective Communication:

Threes value efficiency and productivity, and they hate wasting time. When communicating with them, avoid long, drawn-out meetings and excessive small talk. They start to get antsy when they feel time is being wasted, as they could be off doing something else. If their presence isn't necessary in a meeting, provide them with a concise summary afterward. By doing so, you'll make them happier and more productive in their roles. Also, remember not to burden Threes with personal problems when they have pressing tasks at hand. It is hard for Threes when emotion or personal issues enter the equation because there is little to be “accomplished” there and slows them down.

2. Setting Performance Targets:

Threes excel when they have clear performance targets to meet. They thrive on productivity, efficiency, and achieving their goals. Reward their accomplishments with bonuses or promises of advancement, as this motivates and energizes them. In such a rewarding environment, your workplace will undoubtedly witness increased productivity and success. Threes will pour even more time and energy when there is a goal, bonus or reward waiting. In contrast, they get bored easily if there are not opportunities for advancement.

3. Avoiding Cutting Corners:

While Threes are highly pragmatic and driven to reach the finish line quickly, they may occasionally be tempted to cut corners for a quick win. This can cause friction with those who are more detail oriented. Threes are motivated to check it off the list vs. dot all of their “I’s” and cross their “T’s”. As leaders or team members, we should emphasize the importance of delivering quality work rather than taking shortcuts. While it can be hard to slow Threes down, we can still guide them to prioritize excellence over haste and help Threes develop into more reliable and consistent performers. It is important to also focus on handing them big picture tasks, that might include less detail, as that is where they shine.
