Exploring Type Two's Need to Care for Others

In this article, we will be looking into the Type Twos on the system of the Enneagram. Type Twos are kind hearted individuals, with a natural inclination to help those around them, often without being asked. Their superpower is being able to anticipate others wants and needs, sometimes knowing it before that person does. They find joy in forming bonds and creating a supportive atmosphere for their colleagues. Often in the workplace, we say that it is the Twos who know everybody’s stories because they take the time to ask questions and listen to the answers. When Twos are aware of themselves and feel empowered in their abilities, they can bring value by their warmth and motivating others with their sincere concern and compassion.

However, when Types Twos are stressed or not doing well, they may tend to look for approval from others by offering too much help, resulting in invasive and overbearing actions. This is where the Two will step in unasked or take over tasks being unable to say “no”. They will pour out time and energy for their team, leading to burnt out.

In this article today we'll be exploring the realm of Type Twos and how their drives influence their actions when working in a team environment. We'll also discover methods to encourage and show gratitude to these team players that help create a harmonious and compassionate workplace atmosphere.

Understanding the Motivations of Type Twos

At the core of Type Twos lies a deep need to feel loved and accepted for who they are. Of course, this is important to all of us but Twos believe that their true selves are not worthy of love.  Because they cannot receive love just being who they are, they adopt helping as a strategy to earn validation and approval from others. Type Twos genuinely believe that in order to get, you must first give. This compels them to offer advice or assistance incessantly, even when it may not be requested. The unintended consequence of this behavior is the potential to overwhelm and suffocate team members.

Yet, when Twos are self-aware and doing well, their innate nurturing qualities transform teams into havens of care, support, and hospitality. Self-aware Twos set strong boundaries, understanding what tasks are theirs to take on and what requires delegation. They are so talented at making authentic interpersonal connections, inspiring others with their genuine concern and warmth. They are easy to be around and easy to feel loved by, when they understand how not to overstep other people’s boundaries.

Supporting and Empowering Your Type Two Team Members

A) Appreciation and Approval:

To nurture the best in your Type Two team members, express your appreciation and approval regularly. Twos are motivated by words of affirmation, and knowing that their efforts are recognized and valued will fuel their enthusiasm and drive them to contribute even further.  It is easy to forget your Type Twos as they are always helping. As it feels quite natural for them and their team, it can be easily overlooked because they are always helping.  Just remember to notice them because they are looking for it.

B) Offer Support and Encouragement:

Twos often find it challenging to ask for help or accept it when offered. Remember that they give to get so it is hard for them to receive. As a team leader or member, take the initiative to ask your Two colleagues what they need and how you can support them. Be patient and provide them the space to reflect on their needs, following up with gentle encouragement to ensure they feel comfortable sharing. This can be difficult for them.

C) Foster Interpersonal Connections:

For Twos to thrive, create opportunities for them to interact and connect with others. They flourish in roles that involve frequent interpersonal contact, so ensure they have ample opportunities to engage with people. Avoid isolating them in solitary tasks, as they are at their best when surrounded by a supportive and caring team.
